Campus Construction Management Group Inc. Buoyed by Positive Votes

Amherst, New York (December 15, 2009) – Four successful capital project referendums – three of them for schools in Erie County – have helped Campus Construction Management Group complete its first year of employee ownership on a high note. Campus’ employees bought their K-12 Construction Management Division from former owner Christa Construction LLC in December 2008, becoming an independent company under an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). The four capital projects add up to $138.1 million in total construction value.

In Erie County, voters overwhelmingly approved capital improvement projects totaling more than $105 million. Williamsville Central School can soon begin $29.5 in district-wide upgrades, Iroquois Central School will undergo $17.5 million in reconstruction and site improvements, and Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District can now move forward with a $58.8 million project to renovate all 13 of the District’s schools.

“Important planning decisions made during the pre-referendum stages played a critical role in passing these votes,” remarks John Ticco, Executive Vice President for Campus. “By taking advantage of each district’s capital reserve funds and use-it-or-lose-it State aid, each district was able to put together a package of much-needed renovations and upgrades that had no impact on local taxes.” In today’s economy, says Ticco, the bottom-line impact on taxpayers is often what decides the vote. Without these successful referendums, the districts could not move forward with their capital improvement plans.

“Another challenge is encouraging the taxpayers to get out and vote,” Ticco adds. Prior to the referendum, Ken-Ton officials coordinated with Campus and the District’s architect to build an effective public information program about the proposed project. District residents received informative fact sheets about the project’s costs and goals, attended public forums with live Q&A about the project, and could view project details and diagrams at each of the District’s schools. “The District officials worked hard to make sure that voters understood how the project would be funded and why the schools needed these improvements. The 4-1 vote in favor of the project reflects that,” Ticco says.

Voters in Honeoye Falls Lima Central School District, a Campus client located outside of Rochester, NY, also approved a $32.3 million capital improvement project last week. Campus is also providing construction management services to additional school districts in the Buffalo area, including Pembroke and North Tonawanda.
